Miniature TWOK Chest Badges by Warrior Cosplay

Description

A fellow nicknamed Krasz Zan Zanti (a.k.a. Warrior Cosplay) is pretty much my personal badgemaker at this point. He creates 3D models using autoCAD software, then gets the designs resin-cast. He was the one who created the custom-designed epaulette buttons, chest badges, hat badges and "security wheel" that I use on my original character's black battle dress (Class-C) uniform. So I turned to him again last year when I thought about a unique and pressing need.

In "Generations," a vest or waistcoat is worn underneath Kirk's TWOK Monster Maroon. It's a very slim, tight-fitting design unlike the big, bulky TWOK. I have two of these; my unique black uniform also comes with a matching black-and-gold version of the vest. I felt that the standard TWOK chest badge was just way too big to look good with the vests - almost comically out-of-proportion compared to how small the red section is on the vest. So I redesigned the badge twice, and asked Krasz to make the designs.

One of them is closer to the canon design. That one is something I like to call the "chibi" badge or "super-deformed" badge because all I did was keep the Delta Shield and Ring the same, while seriously downsizing the roundel backing. The other is a more severe redesign and should never be used on a canon uniform. That one is meant for the black waistcoat, and it is an evolution of the ST:ID hat badge. You can think of it as my idea for a J.J. Abrams version of the TWOK Monster Maroon chest badge.

Unfortunately, Krasz was unable to mold in the angled/straight shapes/holes that are supposed to be inside the badges' roundel backings, perhaps due to the requirement that they be very, very small in size. With the folks at Hobby Town USA here in Augusta unable to help, I was forced to try to paint the details in myself using miniature disposable paintbrushes and toothpicks. I also had to create a custom roundel color; the originals had a "taupe" (kind of like a yellowish-peach color) backing. I didn't like the taupe, and knew I wouldn't be able to create anything close with what I had available, so instead, I made a tan color by mixing metallic gold and white paints.

The final result wasn't everything I had hoped for, largely because I was unable to keep the designs inside the miniature badges' roundel backs from looking as sloppy as the sleeve-sized versions of the canon TWOK chest badge design often turn out to be. However, they still look good enough when viewed or photographed from a distance, and they seem to work well with the uniforms they're intended for.

The above left insignia is quite striking, but does fit well with the Trek-verse of the era. I'd definitely enjoy having something like that.
