GEN Waistcoat (Mk.3): December 2014 Updates

Description

Although my third TWOK Monster Maroon uniform - the set I built around my Marco Enterprises jacket and undershirt - was largely complete by Anime Weekend Atlanta 2014, I actually continued to make a number of changes to the way I set up this costume during and after the convention itself.

Although these changes weren't anything particularly major (other than a few new props), they are still pretty visible. This is meant to capture the "evolution" of the way I wear my "Wrath of Khan" uniform, so I thought I'd leave a record of how it looks as of December 2014.  At this point, unless I wind up getting a completely new set of pants someday, I don't think I can improve this particular unit any more than I've already done. At least for now, I think this is the end of a very long road that I started traveling in February 2011.

My costume updates and finalization measures did not just extend to the Marco Enterprises "Wrath of Khan" Class-A Officer's Undress uniform jacket, the part of the outfit that gave the "Monster Maroon" its nickname. I made a minor change to the underlying "Generations" Captain's Waistcoat, as well.

Like the jacket, the waistcoat/vest got a new chest badge. This one, unlike the Marco Enterprises version I put on my jacket, was made by Don Post Enterprises and is dated to 1982. It's a big, heavy vintage metal piece that, like the real ones, was actually made in two pieces: the Delta Shield/Ring and the underlying Roundel.  However, its colors aren't as accurate as the Marco Enterprises version - it's significantly darker and has a noticeably "worn" appearance, and that's why my current preference is to leave this version on the Captain's Waistcoat (which I always wear underneath the jacket but rarely actually use) and put the more visually accurate Marco version on the jacket.

The last update I wanted to share, however, is a bit different because I don't actually plan to use this piece at public events like photo shoots or conventions, at least not now.

This is a cast-resin prop replica of the Sestra Phaser-2B pistol, the Phaser seen in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." I purchased it from eBay. It's a very interesting piece because while its shape is relatively accurate to the prototype props made by Industrial Light and Magic in the 1980s, the color palette is totally different; the black/silver/white paint job is actually based on the famous "White Handle" Phaser from the original series back in 1966.  I already have a version of the ST:III Phaser or Sestra Phaser-1/2B weapons system, a larger, somewhat cruder, but more dramatic-looking wooden prop built for me, as always, by my propmaking friends at Triple-Fiction Productions.  That was the one that went into action at AWA 2014 when my "Copperhead Special" Assault Phaser prop took paint damage and couldn't be used anymore, and I plan to continue using it for as long as I can.

However, I still have a use for this version, even if I'm not going to run around posing for pictures with it. This is going to play the role of what we scientists would call a "control" or "reference standard." It stays in my collection as an example of a higher-quality, more accurate representation of the design, something I can compare other versions to.  Of course, just because I don't plan on actually using it didn't stop me from taking a photo of it to put in this album before placing it back in my "prop locker."
