Atalskes Phaser-V and TSFS Bomber Jacket (2)

Description

Although the addition of a (non-canon) shoulder sling definitely helps manage the prop's tremendous combined weight, the TMP Phaser Rifle - otherwise known as the Atalskes Phaser-V - is still clumsy, cumbersome, and very awkward to tote around.

Triple-Fiction Productions had attached a shoulder sling that had been found lying around in the company's existing inventory, but to my good fortune, this was already just long (or short) enough to sling the rifle at just the right point so that it looks good hanging from the sling and can easily be reached - especially if I don't want to use the prop as a rifle and just want to pull off the pistol.

The only problem with the sling being as short as it is would be that I can't wield the prop as a rifle when it's slung. That's simply because of a fault with the design: the only two visible "hand grips" are at extreme opposite ends of the prop, and one of them - the rear hand grip that has the rifle trigger - can't even be reached when the rifle is slung. That's a clue that the rifle hadn't been initially designed to take a shoulder strap.

Because the Atalskes Phaser-III/IV/V Weapons System seems to have been a fairly long-lived design, having been first seen in 2271, then again in 2283 and even showing up on the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-C), in yet another modified form, in about 2344, it can be safe to assume that even though the Atalskes Phaser-V was a prop design based in/around the time period of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (2271-2278), had Starfleet produced the weapon the option would still have been around throughout the rest of the Classic Movie Era, which hypothetically lasted all the way through the so-called Lost Era between "Generations" and the first season of TNG, up to about 2350.

Therefore, even though the Senior Officer's Bomber Jacket wasn't seen until the mid-2280s in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," it's not altogether incorrect to wear the Bomber Jacket and carry this prop.  However, I had some more pragmatic reasons for using my brand new Hello Cosplay Bomber Jacket.  First of all, it's more comfortable and much easier to put on or take off.  Second, because the Bomber Jacket is pinned up in much the same way as the TWOK Monster Maroon (my primary uniform), it serves as a good simulation for how using the rifle, combined with its optional shoulder sling, might tug on or otherwise affect the Monster Maroon if I paired it with that outfit.

Finally... I can't help but think that this combination has a sort of nostalgic military feel to it, almost reminiscent of the period around World War II, and the military geek in me loves that. =)
