AWA 2014: The Sulu Siblings (Family Portrait)

Description

The friends who form a "Star Trek" group with me whenever we meet up for Anime Weekend Atlanta have made it something of a tradition to make a little bit of fandom history every time we get together. We did that in small pieces last year, but this year, we welcomed a new member who really made a splash.

In the "Star Trek: Ongoing" comics that tie in to the J.J. Abrams movies, it was just revealed in January that Hikaru Sulu has a little sister, Lieutenant Yuki Sulu. Yuki is ostensibly assigned to the Enterprise as a junior engineer, but she hides a dark secret: she's really an agent of Starfleet's notorious black ops division, Section 31 (basically, they're the Federation CIA) and her real mission doesn't involve keeping the ship's lights on.

Yuki has never been cosplayed before, so Sahee, a.k.a. Saheehee Cosplay ( www.facebook.com/MissPandaCosp… ) stepped up to the plate to take on the challenge. With help from Triple-Fiction Productions to supply her three custom-built weapon props, a little perseverance and a lot of luck, she and I became the first cosplayers to bring the Sulu Siblings to life on Friday, the 26th.

This is one of a series of more "formal" photos taken before the start of the full AWA 2014 "Star Trek" photo shoot of just Sahee and I as the Sulu Siblings.  I prefer to cosplay George Takei's version of Sulu, in particular the older Captain Sulu from the Prime Reality 2290s; my personality fits that version of Sulu better, and I can do a pretty good impression of George Takei's voice, allowing me to voice-act my own character.  As a result, this cosplay pair not only represents the first time the Sulu siblings have been seen together, but also serves as a symbolic union of two generations of "Star Trek" as the first incarnation of the franchise meets the newest.

In this particular photo, as Captain Hikaru Sulu, I'm wearing an upgraded version of my now-classic cosplay - the Class-A "Monster Maroon" Officer's Undress Uniform from the "Wrath of Khan"-era feature films; this is a vintage Marco Enterprises version that's much more accurate than my normal Malaysian-made costume.  However, I'm also draping my Hello Cosplay ST:III/IV/V Captain's Bomber Jacket across the shoulders of Sahee, who's portraying Lieutenant Yuki Sulu.  I was hoping to set up the kind of shot that you might see in a photo sitting on the table of the Sulu family home in San Francisco, CA.

Therefore, as a tribute to all the brothers and sisters out there, we give you Captain Hikaru Sulu ("Flasback (VOY)") and Lieutenant Yuki Sulu ("The Khitomer Conflict (ST: Ongoing).")
