Description

My friends at Triple-Fiction Productions have also been very busy helping me and the rest of my friends with new prop developments. This is a heavily improved version of the prototype stunt "Generations" Concept Communicator-based design that I first showed last winter.

Previously, I had asked for a heavily simplified, durable "stunt prop" version of the so-called "Enterprise-B Communicator" because I wanted something simple and strong, capable of withstanding repeated use at conventions, photo shoots or events, capable of being clipped to my belt without a holster and able to replace the fragile DST/AA TWOK communicator I had previously carried.

Although my friends delivered on my request, they felt unsatisfied with their approach, which was very, very inaccurate, and all but gave up on the project. One of my buddies and I told them to hang in there and discussed ways to show that the design still had promise. It was during that time that I razed the interior of my prototype variant, rebuilt it using decals instead of raised buttons or felt pads, and made it significantly more accurate.

This gave the TFP folks renewed hope in the design, allowing my other pal to convince them to revisit it. They have just produced two entirely different new prototypes for this heavily simplified prop. While the control panel (the main issue with this prop) for my pal's new one is a large decal, the one on mine is actually a carefully carved piece of wood that I then personally painted into more appropriate colors.

The best thing about this is that since I refitted my original prototype variant, both of them are suitable for basic convention use.

This penultimate photo is a comparison of the two props when arranged side-by-side.  Notice that the shapes are very, very different.  That's because the Mk.2 prototype variant that I previously had is actually inaccurate in shape and is just a solid box-like shape all around.  The real ones seemed to have a hollowed-out indent in the bottom, and the new Mk.3 version has a similar cutout.
